Mississippi River Health Alliance Launches Walking Epidural Program At Almonte General Hospital

October 07, 2025

Almonte, ON – The Mississippi River Health Alliance (MRHA) is pleased to announce the launch of a Walking Epidural Program at the Almonte General Hospital’s (AGH) Obstetrics (OB) Department. This new option allows patients who choose epidural pain relief during labour to remain mobile, supporting comfort, encouraging movement, and promoting a more empowered birthing experience.

The Obstetrics Department at AGH continues to grow each year, with families across the region choosing the hospital for its reputation for compassionate, high-quality care. Walking epidurals are recognized worldwide as an excellent practice in obstetrical care. Research shows that maintaining mobility during labour can reduce the need for medical intervention and improve outcomes for both parent and baby. With the introduction of this program, AGH joins other hospitals in the region in expanding choices for families and advancing patient-centred care.

“This practice change has been in the works for a number of years, and we are delighted to bring it to our community,” said Dr. Bahaa Awwad, Chief of the Obstetrics Department. “Our commitment is to ensure that every family feels confident, supported, and cared for throughout their birth experience. With this new service, we continue to prioritize compassionate, evidence-based care, giving families more choices as they welcome their newest members.”

Dr. Melanie Fortune, Chief of Staff at Almonte General Hospital, emphasized the importance of both patient choice and the team-based approach: “Walking epidurals allow our patients to benefit from pain relief while still being able to move and change positions during labour. This program reflects our team’s ongoing commitment to ensuring families have access to the very best birthing options close to home, delivered by our dedicated obstetricians, anaesthetists, family physicians, midwives, and nurses.”

The Walking Epidural Program officially launched this week at Almonte General Hospital.
