Algonquin College Honours LCPS Chief Travis Mellema with 2026 Community Services Award

October 27, 2026

Lanark County Paramedic Service (LCPS) Chief Travis Mellema has been named the recipient of Algonquin College’s 2026 Alumni of Distinction Community Services Award, recognizing more than two decades of service, leadership and commitment to community health.

A 2005 graduate of Algonquin College’s Paramedic program, Mellema joined LCPS as a frontline paramedic shortly after graduation. Over the course of his career, he has contributed to paramedic education, peer support and mental health initiatives, the expansion of advanced and community-based paramedic care, and broader efforts to strengthen the paramedic profession.

Mellema moved into LCPS leadership in 2016, became Deputy Chief in 2017 and was appointed Chief in 2020. Under his leadership, LCPS has continued to expand the role paramedics play in supporting the health of the community, including through Community Paramedicine and other programs designed to provide care beyond traditional emergency response.

Algonquin College’s Community Services Award recognizes graduates who demonstrate a deep commitment to improving the lives of others and fostering positive change. In announcing this year’s recipients, the College highlighted Mellema’s work to advance patient care while supporting the health and well-being of frontline responders.

The 2026 Alumni of Distinction recipients will be formally celebrated at Algonquin College’s awards ceremony on November 5.

Congratulations to Travis on this well-deserved recognition.
